The back story
About Art in a grain silo, jazz in March: Cape Town’s arts
Zeitz MOCAA opened in 2017 in the V&A Waterfront’s old grain silo, its atrium carved from the concrete tubes. Since then Cape Town has become one of Africa’s great art cities: the Norval Foundation in Tokai, the commercial galleries of the V&A’s Silo District and Woodstock, the Iziko South African National Gallery in the Company’s Garden. On stage there is opera, ballet and the Cape Town Philharmonic at Artscape, theatre at the Baxter and at Theatre on the Bay, and every year the Cape Town International Jazz Festival.
The museums
Zeitz MOCAA, in the Silo District at the V&A, is the museum of contemporary art from Africa and its diaspora. The Norval Foundation, at 4 Steenberg Road in Tokai, is an art centre with a sculpture garden. The Iziko South African National Gallery is in the Company’s Garden.

Southern Guild (Silo 5, V&A), Everard Read Cape Town (3 Portswood Road, V&A), Stevenson and Goodman Gallery show South African and African artists.
Plan a day around Zeitz MOCAA and the Silo District galleries, then a night at Artscape.
The stage
Artscape on the Foreshore is the city’s big theatre centre, home to performances by Cape Town Opera, Cape Town City Ballet and the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra. Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay stages plays and musicals; The Labia on Orange Street is an independent cinema.
Remembering
The District Six Museum, at 15 Buitenkant Street, remembers the community of District Six and the forced removals; the Cape Town Holocaust & Genocide Centre, at 88 Hatfield Street, teaches about the Holocaust and genocide.
Our advice: check each company’s own website for the season: Cape Town’s stages are busiest from late summer into winter.
